Understanding Dental Implants And The Procedures Involved

Dental implants have now been around for over 30 years and are one of the biggest advances in dentistry in modern time. There are many different systems and techniques involved but studies have shown that the success rates of single tooth implants can be as high as 97%.

So what exactly is a dental implant? A dental implant is a substitute for the root of the missing tooth and it acts as an anchor for a replacement tooth. They can look and feel like natural teeth and usually are much preferred by patients to a denture or plate which as you know, goes in and out of the mouth, can be uncomfortable, Osteo biflex loose and can affect taste and speech.

In the first place you should make an appointment as the dentist has to assess you to make sure that an implant is a suitable option for you. Usually I would do a clinical examination and would also take some moulds of your teeth and Xrays.

It is only following the assessment the exact type of implant and technique can be discussed. The standard procedure is a two stage surgical technique followed by the restoration on top. Yes it does involve surgery but if you have coped with having an extraction in the past then you should find you can manage the placement of an implant. In fact many patients comment that healing time is a lot easier after the surgery because rather than removing a decayed or broken tooth for example we are placing a sterile implant in controlled circumstances so healing is much quicker and pain afterwards is easily controlled by medication. The placement of the implant is normally done with local anaesthetic like the extraction.

We then normally leave the implant for a period of a few months and 'uncover' it with a much shorter and simpler surgery visit. After this we take further moulds of the new implant and build up a crown to match the existing teeth.

The whole treatment can last over a few stages but, by breaking it down into these manageable visits over time as well as having a clear treatment plan can make the whole process a lot less daunting and easy for you to handle.

As in everything, the unknown can sometimes be a lot scarier than the reality so choose a dentist who will carefully explain each stage to you.
