On the Road Again - Staying Healthy While You Travel

The sun is high, shining down on us from early morning until late in the evening. The air is warm, the breezes light. The sky is blue, the trees in full leaf. Summer is here and we want to make the most of it. For many Americans, it's time for a road trip.

No matter where you going or which route you take to get there, remember to drive safely and stay healthy. The rules of the road are simple but effective, leaving you and your travel companions to enjoy the ride and arrive at your destination with your bodies - smiles - intact.

First things first - make a plan! Sure, getting out the map and deciding routes, timings and stopovers are important, but don't forget other, equally important points in your preparation: food and entertainment.

o Kids want chocolate, Osteo biflex you want healthy. Pack a few chocolate-coated energy bars for the best of both worlds.

o Take a bag filled with carrot and celery sticks, apple slices, grapes and raisins. All of these foods have staying power to help them last on a long trip, are easy to carry and they taste great, too.

o Don't forget to carry a few bottles of water. Drinking plenty of water will ward off dehydration, as well as help keep you and your passengers happy and alert. You'll arrive at your destination ready to enjoy the new surroundings, rather than feeling tired and dried out.

o Take along plenty of entertainment for the kids. Handheld video games, personal CD players and other electronic devices will keep them amused for hours, providing you with a peaceful driving environment.

When you're ready and on the road, stay alert and follow safe driving practices:

o Keep your eyes on the road. If the kids are acting up, don't turn around to talk to them! Use your rearview mirror to quickly give them 'the look' (you know the one). Our children understand our 'looks' very well and will know that you've had enough just from seeing it in your eyes

o Be aware of the other vehicles on the road, where they are and how they're driving. You have three mirrors at your disposal; make sure to use them on a regular basis.

o Maintain enough space between your vehicle and the one in front of you. If your car is travelling at 65mph, then there should be a difference of at least three seconds driving time between you and the car ahead of you. Check this by choosing a landmark and then counting the seconds from the time the car in front of you passes it and the time you get to it. If you didn't have time to count to three, you need to fall back a bit. Being crowded in on the highway means you're more likely to end up in a collision.

o Try to stay off the phone, but if you need to make or take a call, use a hands-free set

A road trip can be fun and help build stronger family relationships, but you need to make it a pleasant time for everyone. A small amount of groundwork and safe driving habits can provide your entire family with good, long-lasting memories.
